The Greek America Foundation’s Young Philanthropists Endowment Fund received a $7500 gift from Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, the former Chairman of the board directors of the foundation and Dean at the Chang School at Ryerson University in Toronto.
Impressed with the plan and strategy of the young people involved, as well as the sustainability that an endowment fund brings to any organization, Dr. Bountrogianni made the donation which was presented at the group’s gathering in New York on February 24 at Loi Estiatorio at a dinner hosted by Chef Maria Loi.
Chef Loi welcomed the group, comprised of young members of the Greek America Foundation 35 years and younger, and shared her own vision of philanthropy, which in her world view, means helping the less fortunate or those who may not be in a position to help themselves.
The Young Philanthropists of the Greek America Foundation was launched as an effort to train the next generation of philanthropists. The group is comprised from members from throughout the United States and Canada who are selected annually by a committee.
Each member is responsible for raising a minimum of $1000 annually during his/her term of membership, which is added to the endowment fund, whose proceeds are used for charitable purposes as selected and directed by the members, themselves.
This year, the group chose to support Omada Aigaiou (Team Aegean) a non-profit organization based in Greece which provides medical support to people in remote parts of Greece.
The Young Philanthropists recede monthly training and coursework about philanthropy, fundraising and the world of non-profit giving and then are tasked to apply these skills to raise funds for the endowment fund.
The group has its own investment committee, which works in concert with a board member of the Greek America Foundation, to manage the endowment fund. The group also has a grant committee, a membership and recruitment committee, which provide the young people with hands-on experience in A to Z philanthropy management.
Applications are now open for the Young Philanthropists 2019-20 Season.
