For the past month, the Greek America Foundation’s 16 dedicated volunteers have offered their time and talents to support unaccompanied refugee children on the island of Chios.
This team of young people from throughout the United States and Canada has been working alongside a dedicated team of professionals from the Greek non-profit METAdrasi, which is dedicated to supporting underage children who have arrived in Greece, alone.
Our volunteers have worked in various capacities to support METAdrasi and to help bring a bit of humanity to one of the most vulnerable population groups on the planet.
At METAdrasi’s shelter in Chios town, a team of volunteers have helped with everyday chores including cooking, cleaning, and painting, among others. They have also engaged the children in lessons and activities on topics such as personal hygiene, computer skills, English language, music, yoga and meditation.
In addition to supporting the shelter, a separate team of volunteers with experience in pedagogy have served as teachers at METAdrasi’s education center at the refugee camp — home to thousands of migrants. Their work has given child refugees the opportunity to learn Greek, English and other subjects such as mathematics.
Our volunteers have also taken METAdrasi’s children on various excursions throughout Chios island. Such excursions include beach trips, visits to historic villages, soccer matches and a bowling party, among others.
As their month in Chios comes to an end — and they say goodbye to the children whose lives they’ve changed forever — this group of dynamic young people have decided that they want to leave an even more lasting, tangible impact.
With a goal of $1300, the volunteers have organized a fundraising campaign that will provide critical supplies for METAdrasi’s shelter. These supplies include numerous household necessities such as a new refrigerator, couches, dining tables, chairs and groceries — all of which will drastically improve the everyday lives of the children inhabiting the shelter.
Please consider making a donation to help our volunteers leave a lasting impact on the lives of these children.
Help them reach their goal!
