A dynamic partnership with St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago is bearing fruit and supporting the Greek America Foundation’s #ChildrenOfGreece campaign.
Every Sunday for the past six months, a free-will offering has been requested by parishioners attending Sunday liturgy.
The initiative was created after Fr. Chrysanthos Kerkeres, the priest at St George saw stats about the plight of Greece’s children and reached out to Gregory Pappas asking how his community could help.
“You see the headlines, you read the statistics and you say to yourself— it’s 2019. How can such poverty and hardship for children still exist in a European nation?” Kerkeres said.
What attracted Fr. Chrysanthos and Paul Rentzelos, the Parish Council President, to our program was the diversity of the children’s charities that we are supporting.
“Christ’s love must be for all children and not just a particular race or religion,” Kerkeres said, adding that “I was impressed that the Foundation’s campaign is supporting six different charities that are doing important work in Greece for all children, regardless if they’re native, immigrant or refugee children.”
“These are all God’s children and we chose to support this endeavor exactly for that reason,” according to Rentzelos.
The #ChildrenOfGreece campaign is currently supporting six registered children’s charities in Greece providing services in various capacities. Their important work directly impacts all facets of children in Greek society — from birth through their developing years.
Phase one of St. George’s campaign includes raising funds. To date, $5,578.00 has been collected.
The second phase involves engaging the various ministries of the church and matching them with the charities to develop human connections.
This includes pairing St. George youth with young people in Greece who are being served by the charities in our network for pen-pal programs and even visitations from St. George parishioners to Greece.
